The Teachers of Color Job Fair was first held in 2000 as part of the Southeast Michigan Diversity Committee's (SEMDC's) efforts to increase diversity in the faculty and administration of member schools. SEMDC was founded in 1997 as a alliance of Heads of Schools, Directors, Diversity Coordinators, and others from independent schools in the Metro Detroit and Ann Arbor areas interested in addressing diversity issues within their school communities. In its inaugural year, the Fair was held at Cranbrook School; in its second year, it was held at Herlong Cathedral School. In 2002, the Fair moved to Ann Arbor and Greenhills School, where it has remained since then. Also in 2002, the Association of Independent Michigan Schools (AIMS) joined as a co-sponsor of the Fair. In 2002, the Southeast Michigan Diversity Committee became an official AIMS committee, due in part to the success of their alliance on the Job Fair. The commitment of the individual members of the Committee as well as the schools involved has not wavered since the first Job Fair, and the Committee looks forward to many more successful Fairs. |
